What is a z-score?
The number of standard deviations a value is from the mean: z = (x − μ) / σ. A z of +1 means one standard deviation above the mean.
How is the percentile found?
From the standard normal cumulative distribution function — the area under the bell curve to the left of the z-score.
What is a “good” z-score?
It depends on context. About 68% of values fall within z = ±1, 95% within ±2, and 99.7% within ±3 (the empirical rule).
How accurate is the percentile?
It uses a standard erf approximation accurate to about ±0.0005 in probability — plenty for coursework.
